Youth Employment Trends in Gyeongnam: A Model for Success

Published November 5, 2025

Gyeongnam’s youth employment rate has seen a remarkable increase, reaching 39.0% in the third quarter of this year, while the national average has declined. This positive trend highlights the effectiveness of tailored employment policies aimed at supporting young individuals through various stages of their educational and professional journeys.

The region’s youth unemployment rate has also significantly improved, dropping from 7.9% in the first quarter to 4.2% in the third quarter, marking the second-lowest rate among South Korea’s 17 provinces. This shift indicates a revitalization of job-seeking enthusiasm among youth and a more dynamic labor market.

Despite these gains, Gyeongnam’s youth employment rate still lags behind the national average, largely due to a high university enrollment rate of 82.9%, which limits immediate entry into the workforce. The local economy, heavily reliant on manufacturing, also presents challenges in providing jobs that appeal to young workers.

As Gyeongnam continues to implement customized support systems for students, graduates, and current employees, the focus remains on creating an environment where young people can thrive. Will these initiatives serve as a blueprint for other regions aiming to boost youth employment?
